The canopy
and forward section form a large one-piece hatch, allowing easy
access to the innards of the fuselage for installation and
maintenance. The rugged 6061 T-6 aluminum landing gear is included
and painted pearl blue to match the covering on the bottom of
the
fuse. The firewall is set up and templates are included for Zenoah's
new GT-80 Twin; plus, an adapter is included for the Zenoah
G-62
Engine. Hinges, wheels, control horns, tail wheel, and other hardware
are not included, as Hangar 9 feels that most pilots who purchase
an airplane of this caliber have a specific idea of what hardware
works best for them. Hangar
9's 330L duplicates the full scale tail modes and thus benefits
with more control authority. With an all-up weight of 24.8 pounds,
Hangar 9's Extra is light for its size, and it flies light
as well.
We've flown the Extra with both the Zenoah G62 and with the new
GT-80 Twin. With the G-62, the Extra is a sport flyer's dream.
While
it won't give unlimited vertical, it's very competitive and capable
of all the Basic and Sportsman class IMAC maneuvers. With Zenoah's
new GT-80 Twin, the Extra has more than enough "oomph"
for multiple vertical snaps on an upline, while torque rolls occur
at about 5/8 throttle. There's more than enough power for freestyle
or 3D maneuvers. Hangar 9's Extra 330L offers pure control inputs
with minimal control coupling. Rudder inputs result in zero roll
coupling and only a slight amount of down pitching that can be
corrected with a few clicks of up elevator mixing. With the stock
incidences
and center of gravity location, the Extra tracked perfectly straight
on the uplines at full power, as well as at idle on the downlines.
We ran through the 2000 Unlimited IMAC sequence several times and
actually did better with the 33% Extra than with the 35% Cap that
we had been practicing with previously. The Extra makes a great
IMAC-competitive airplane for any of the classes, including Unlimited.
We expect to see many at this year's contests, after its late summer
release.
With the control throws turned up to over 40°, thanks to a double-bevelled
hinge lines, the Extra is a 3D'n fool! Hangar 9's 330L can perform
torque rolls, waterfalls, elevators, and blenders that you'd have
to see to believe (rotations are so fast that the Extra is a blur).
With its light wing loading and high control authority, the Extra
is great for showing off freestyle and 3D maneuvers.
